Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.(John 18:4-6 ESV)
Having my morning Bible reading and reflecting on the Gospel of John, chapter 18 verse 6 took me by surprise. I have always read it but unlike any other days, God opened my eyes this morning to see how powerful verse 6 is in itself full of undeniably, glorious and awesomely great and majestic reaction shown by the mod which came to seize Christ Jesus lead by Judas the traitor.
“Who are you looking for?” Jesus asks to which the mod replied, “Jesus of Nazareth”. Then here comes a shocking statement uttered by Jesus to which the mod responded by withdrawing back and felling to the ground.
Wow! What is going on here? Have they not come to seize Christ Jesus? Why drawing back and felling on the ground?
Reading this, this morning I could not help it but to ran and get my ESV the English-Greek Reverse Interlinear New Testament to see what answer did Jesus give them to which the mod responded by withdrawing back and felling to the ground (a worship reaction)
Jesus answered them:
Just like John 8:58 to which the responsive reaction by the teachers of laws was to stone Christ Jesus for blasmephy when Jesus answered before Abraham was ego eimi (I AM)
Why want to stone Him? (John 8:58) Why withdrew back and fell to the ground? (John 18:6)
This is why:
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.'” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. (Exodus 3:14-15 ESV)
Jesus is claiming to be “I am who I am” the name to which the Jews know belong to Yahweh, the one and only God.
Is this why C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity wrote:
I am trying here to prevent anyone from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [Jesus Christ]: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said wouldnot be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is,the Son of God,: or else a madman or something worse …. You can shut him up for fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great humanteacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to” Oh! He is what he claim to be.
I rejoin with doubting Thomas in John 20:28, Christ Jesus is my Lord and my God.
