The Scripture Quest For the Father and the Son
Oneness apostolic believe that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are deferent manifestation of God. The same person acting at different roles in time. It is for this as one of reason they reject the Christian Doctrine of Trinity, namely One God in three distinct persons.
In this quest for the Father and the Son, I hope and pray that the Spirit of truth whom Christ Jesus promised to send to believers will fall on us so as we can remember and hold fast to the teaching of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus thus glorifying him as the Spirit of Truth leads us into the Scripture.
As Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, I argue you to prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed as we go through the Scriptures to reason the Person(s) of God out of love and respect.
Where Oneness Apostolic Miss It: Reasoning From The Scripture
I will use so much context as possible so that it would not be I who shows where Oneness apostolic theology is wrong when it comes to Persons of God but the Scripture itself “for the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV)
I have divide this paper in Three part:
1. The Father Says: You Are My Son
2. The Son Says: You Are My Father
3. What Did The Apostles Understand Father-Son Relationship
The Father Says: Your Are My Son:
When Both Persons Are Present At The Same Time And Space:
At Jesus’ Baptism:
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:9-11 ESV cf Matt 3:13-17,Luke 4:18,21)
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. (Mark 9:2-8 ESV)
Peter’s Explanation of Jesus Transfiguration Moment
For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.(2 Peter 1:16-18 ESV)
My Son In David’s Psalm Prophecy:
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
“As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
I will tell of the decree:
The LORD said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
(Psalm 2:1-12 ESV)
Son-Father In Book Hebrews:
On the Supremacy Of The Son Over Angels:
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
For to which of the angels did God ever say,
“You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”?
“I will be to him a father,
and he shall be to me a son”?
And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,
“Let all God’s angels worship him.”
Of the angels he says,
“He makes his angels winds,
and his ministers a flame of fire.”
But of the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has anointed you
with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
and the heavens are the work of your hands;
they will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment,
like a robe you will roll them up,
like a garment they will be changed.
But you are the same,
and your years will have no end.”
And to which of the angels has he ever said,
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?
Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1 ESV)
The Son; The Great High Priest
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,
“You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”;
as he says also in another place,
“You are a priest forever,
after the order of Melchizedek.”
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.(Hebrews 5:1-10 ESV)
Summary of The Father Say: Your Are My Son:
What then can we conclude from these Scripture that brings a relationship between the Father and the Son:
The Father and the Son are two distinct persons of One and Only God at the same time and space.
Hebrews brings the conversion between the Father and the Son in Heaven where the Father places everything under the Son’s rule. The Father then commands the angels in Heaven to Worship the Son. It is important to notice the Father calling His Son “O God”.
Moreover the Apostles tells us about the Father speaking in Heaven to the Son as Christ was on earth. which leads us to believe that they are not one person in different appearance or period or divine role but two distinct persons who appear at the same time and space.
The Father is not the Father if the Son does not exist at the same time as the Father, He identifies himself as the Son’s God “your God” and His Father and His Son as God.
This help us understand why Jesus Christ, himself being God called the Father, his God and our God, to which I will write more on the second part “Son says: You are My Father”
Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” (John 20:17 ESV)
